Max Martin

A few weeks ago I posted this quote by Incubus on my Facebook page:

"Yes I feel emphatic about not being static
And not eating the bullshit that's being fed to me
Cause now I'm full
Just when you thought it was safe to think
In comes mental piracy, and no
What I'm looking for
Can not be sold to me
I wish they all would stop trying
Cause what I want, and what I need, is and will always be free"

This guy is the reason I posted that quote:

http://mic.com/articles/110236/the-grammys-just-proved-that-one-man-was-behind-all-the-biggest-pop-music-in-2014

I was learning songs for a cover gig and there were 4 songs in a row by Katy Perry, Pink, Jessie J, and Taylor Swift that all sounded exactly the same. I mean seriously exactly the same - not in the generic "I just don't like this" or "I don't like anything mainstream" or "I just don't like pop" or "the chord progression is the same" kind of way. And when you have to learn a song on an instrument exactly as is on the recording, it becomes very clear when songs are nearly identical. This guy is dumbing down music in a way that I find truly frightening. When enough recycled songs like this are crowding the mainstream world for such a long period of time I truly believe it changes the way people hear and think about music and changes what they expect from music. I'm not trying to deny his talent, he is a brilliant songwriter. Do I like "Quit Playing Games With My Heart" or "Hit Me Baby One More Time"? No, I don't. Do I think they're great pop songs? Hell yea! This is a brilliant songwriter who has either run out of ideas or knows he has to do nearly nothing but cash his check and in my opinion, it's horribly detrimental to the music industry and more importantly, listeners.
